Bible, blessed, confidence in God, cursed, Jesus, Prayer, prosperity, Psalms, repentance, the LORD, trust in God

Today’s quote and prayer from
“Psalms 365: Develop a Life of Worship and Prayer”
by David Kitz.

Reading: Psalm 78:56-64

LORD God,
collectively as a nation,
we have wandered away from you.
LORD in your mercy
lead us back to the center of your holy will.
Give us repentant hearts that seek your face
and hunger for you, Lord Jesus,
the living Word.

Amen.

— — —

This is what the LORD says:

  “Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
    who draws strength from mere flesh
    and whose heart turns away from the LORD.
That person will be like a bush in the wastelands;
    they will not see prosperity when it comes.
They will dwell in the parched places of the desert,
    in a salt land where no one lives.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD,
    whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
    that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
    and never fails to bear fruit.”

(Jeremiah 17:5-8)*

Today’s quote and prayer from
“Psalms 365: Develop a Life of Worship and Prayer”
by David Kitz.Psalm 67_1-2

Reading: Psalm 67

LORD God,
I thank you for all the blessings
you have showered on my life.
Most of all I thank you for my salvation
through Jesus Christ.
Show me how I can extend your blessing
to others who don’t know you.

Amen.

— — —

All these blessings will come on you
and accompany you
if you obey the LORD your God:

You will be blessed in the city
and blessed in the country.

The fruit of your womb will be blessed,
and the crops of your land
and the young of your livestock—
the calves of your herds
and the lambs of your flocks.

Your basket and your kneading trough
will be blessed.

You will be blessed when you come in
and blessed when you go out.

The LORD will grant that the enemies
who rise up against you will be defeated before you.
They will come at you from one direction
but flee from you in seven.

The LORD will send a blessing on your barns
and on everything you put your hand to.
The LORD your God will bless you
in the land he is giving you.

The LORD will establish you as his holy people,
as he promised you on oath,
if you keep the commands of the LORD your God
and walk in obedience to him.

Then all the peoples on earth will see
that you are called by the name of the LORD,
and they will fear you.

(Deuteronomy 28:2-10)*

by David Kitz.Psalm 57_1

Reading: Psalm 57:1-7

LORD God,
you are my defender.
Help me daily to appreciate

When the cruelty of this world assaults me,
I find shelter under your wings.
Thank you, Lord Jesus.

Amen.

— — —

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
you who kill the prophets
and stone those sent to you,
how often I have longed
to gather your children together,
as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,
and you were not willing.

Look, your house is left to you desolate.
For I tell you,
you will not see me again until you say,
‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

I will praise the LORD!Psalm 118_27a (1)

Reading: Psalm 65:1-4

For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.

Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion;
    to you our vows will be fulfilled.
You who answer prayer,
    to you all people will come.
When we were overwhelmed by sins,
    you forgave our transgressions.
Blessed are those you choose
    and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,
    of your holy temple.

Redeemed from the Realm of the Dead

blessed, God, praise the LORD, Prayer, Psalms, the dead, the LORD, the rich, the upright, wealth

I will praise the LORD!Psalm 6 -365

Reading: Psalm 49:12-19

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

People, despite their wealth, do not endure;
    they are like the beasts that perish.

This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.
They are like sheep and are destined to die;
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.
But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;
    he will surely take me to himself.
Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
for they will take nothing with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.
Though while they live they count themselves blessed—
    and people praise you when you prosper—
they will join those who have gone before them,
    who will never again see the light of life.

Today’s quote and prayer from
“Psalms 365: Develop a Life of Worship and Prayer”
by David Kitz.Psalm 19-1

Reading: Psalm 19:1-6

Heavenly Father,
help me hear your voice speaking to me in nature.
Open my eyes and my ears
to the glory of your creation.
You are more wonderful than I can imagine.
I praise you for all your marvelous works
in land, sky and water.
You made it all!

Amen.

— — —

God saw all that he had made,
and it was very good.
And there was evening,
and there was morning—the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed
in all their vast array.
By the seventh day God had finished the work
he had been doing;
so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,
because on it he rested from all the work of creating
that he had done.

blessed, commitment, eternal life, Jesus, praise the LORD, Prayer, Psalms, the LORD, trust in God

Reading: Psalm 146:1-5
Praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD, my soul.
I will praise the LORD all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
Do not put your trust in princes,
in human beings, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God (NIV). *

img_20220523_1402248Reflection
Last week, I had a delightful telephone conversation with my mom. She was pleased to report that her last and final round of cataract surgery had gone very well. Her vision has greatly improved. Speaking of her follow-up exam, she said, “The most excited person in the room was the doctor. He was thrilled that the surgery turned out so well. I was the oldest patient he had ever operated on.”

My mom is ninety-four, but she doesn’t let a minor thing like her age slow her down. After all, age is just a number. She still keeps a busy schedule and out works many women half her age. Who else but my mother would annually sew a hundred quilts and donate them to Lutheran World Relief?

But she knows, just as we all know that her life here on this earth will come to an end. We best make the most of it while we have this precious gift. Time marches on, and time will eventually march us off to the grave as surely as the sun will rise tomorrow on a new day.

In today’s reading from Psalm 146, the psalmist makes a lifelong commitment. He commits himself to praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, my soul. I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

This is not an insignificant commitment. We were made to worship, and we all do it, even the atheists among us. Some worship their money; others worship the pleasures of this world. Perhaps the greatest god of the current age is the god of self. Monuments to personal vanity have been erected all around us. I have been known to set up a few of these myself.

Genuine praise for the LORD tears down personal idols. It establishes His lordship over our lives. It acknowledges that He is in control. I have so little power. I can’t turn a white hair to black, at least not in the true sense. But the LORD knows the number of hairs on my head and the number of my days. Ultimately, my life is in His hands. My life here is temporary. That’s why I need to put my hope and my trust in God—the eternal One. The psalmist’s words ring true. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God. And that blessing holds true for ninety-four-year-olds too.

Response: LORD God, I thank and praise you for the gift of life. You are worthy of worship. I commit to worshipping you every day for the rest of my life. Thank you for eternal life through Jesus. Amen.

Your Turn: Will you praise the LORD for all your life? Are you ready to make that commitment?

Note: My mother went home to her forever home in July, 2022, less than six months short of her 100th birthday. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants (Psalm 116:15).
