Heavenly Father,
I want to live my life
in constant communion with you.
I want to live in your presence
and eat and drink of you,
Lord Jesus.
I know apart from you
I have no good thing.
You are my portion and my cup.
I give you thanks.
Amen.

Then Jesus declared,
“I am the bread of life.
Whoever comes to me will never go hungry,
and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

But as I told you,
you have seen me and still you do not believe.

All those the Father gives me will come to me,
and whoever comes to me
I will never drive away.

For I have come down from heaven
not to do my will
but to do the will of him who sent me.

And this is the will of him who sent me,
that I shall lose none of all those
he has given me,
but raise them up at the last day.

For my Father’s will is that everyone
who looks to the Son
and believes in him shall have eternal life,
and I will raise them up at the last day.”
(John 6:35-40 NIV)*

New from David Kitz

James—the brother of Jesus—who was this man? What evidence do we have that this “brother of our Lord” even existed?

David Kitz digs deep into archeology, family dynamics, church history, and the biblical texts. What emerges from his research is a portrait of a decisive, pivotal leader who embodied the will and character of Jesus Christ.

But how did James—James the unbeliever—transform to become a leader who changed the course of world history? In these pages you will uncover the answer and rediscover for yourself the life-changing power of the gospel.

I will praise the LORD!

Psalm 107:1-9

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.
Some wandered in desert wastelands,
finding no way to a city where they could settle.
They were hungry and thirsty,
    and their lives ebbed away.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way
to a city where they could settle.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things. *

Today’s quote and prayer from
“Psalms 365: Develop a Life of Worship and Prayer”
by David Kitz.Psalm 140_9-13

Reading: Psalm 140:9-13

Father God,
I am selfish by nature.
It’s not natural for me to think of others first.
Help me to change.
I want to genuinely care about others.
Show me what I can do to help
because Jesus cares.

Amen.

“Then the righteous will answer him,
‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you something to drink?

When did we see you a stranger and invite you in,
or needing clothes and clothe you?

When did we see you sick
or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you,
whatever you did for one of the least
of these brothers and sisters of mine,
you did for me.’

Reflection

This week’s I Love the Psalms theme is hunger.

Our Lord taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”

As I think over my life, I can’t think of a single day when that prayer has not been answered. In other words, the Lord has had an unbroken record of faithfulness. I have never gone to bed hungry except by my own choice.

Today’s verse from the Psalms reminds us that God is the one who daily supplies our needs.

He gives justice to the poor and food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free (Psalm 146:7, CEV).

The Lord’s provision goes beyond physical needs. As the psalmist declares, the LORD also provides justice and sets prisoners free. Worry often holds me as a prisoner. What about you?

But when I consider the LORD’s faithfulness, there is no place left for worry. He banishes hunger along with worry. We have this assurance: God will take care of all your needs with the wonderful blessings that come from Christ Jesus! (Philippians 4:19, CEV).

Response: LORD God, thank you for your daily provision of good things. You have been more than faithful. My heart overflows with thanks for your goodness. Amen.

Your Turn: Has God been faithful in providing for you? Has He come through for you?

God, healthy weight, hunger, hungry, snack, starvation

Reflection

This week’s I Love the Psalms theme is hunger.

Hunger comes in many forms. As the day progresses at various times I am hungry. At times I may even think I am starving. Of course this is nonsense. After a week without food I might get down to a more healthy weight, but even then I would not be starving. True starvation is more than missing a mid afternoon snack. Most of us have lost touch with the true meaning of hunger.

Today’s verse from the Psalms reminds us that God is the one who satisfies our hunger.

To everyone who is thirsty, he gives something to drink; to everyone who is hungry, he gives good things to eat (Psalm 107:9, CEV).

Our greatest hunger may not be for food. We may be most hungry for love or acceptance, inner peace or forgiveness. Whatever your need, bring it to God. He is the suppler of every good thing.

Response: LORD God, thank you for being my supplier. Every good and perfect gift comes from you. I give thanks for your goodness. Amen.

Your Turn: What is your greatest need today? Will God be your supplier?

Reflection

This week’s I Love the Psalms theme is goodness.

I don’t like being late for supper. I don’t like being the last one in the line up for the self-serve banquet. I might miss out on something good.

I’m hungry for something good. Aren’t you? Of course, something good can be more than just food. Sometimes it’s good-natured fun with friends. Sometimes it’s a game, or a round of physical or mental exercise, and at other times it’s rest and relaxation.

Something good comes in a variety of packages.

I like the promise in today’s verse from the Psalms: Young lions may go hungry or even starve, but if you trust the Lord, you will never miss out on anything good (Psalm 34:10, CEV).

The key factor is trusting in the LORD. Are you someone who trusts in the LORD even in hard times?

Response: LORD God, increase my faith. I want to experience the good things you have set aside for me. Help me daily to put my trust in you. Amen.

Your Turn: What does trusting in God mean for you today?
