Delivered from Death

Reading: Psalm 116:1-9
I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
The cords of death entangled me,
the anguish of the grave came over me;
I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
Then I called on the name of the LORD:
“LORD, save me!”
The LORD is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
The LORD protects the unwary;
when I was brought low, he saved me.
Return to your rest, my soul,
for the LORD has been good to you.
For you, LORD, have delivered me from death,
my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before the LORD
in the land of the living (NIV). *

Reflection
Three and a half years ago, on a personal level I experienced the power and truth of the following words: For you, LORD, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

When I was seventeen, during a routine physical exam required for college entry, I was informed I had a heart murmur. Years later when I talked with other doctors, I was told my leaky heart valve was barely perceptible—not a big deal. Well, it was no big deal until I collapsed while sitting at my desk on the morning of July 16th, 2020. Suddenly, I felt incredibly weak. I dropped to the floor with my head between my knees. I tried desperately to remain conscious.

Moments earlier my wife had driven off to do some errands. I had visions of her returning to find me dead on the floor. Frantic I reached for my phone. Dialed. Ring. Ring. Ring. Prayed for her to pick up.

She answered. In minutes she was home. An ambulance was called, arrived, and half-conscious I was whisked off to hospital.

For the next eight days I teetered on the brink of death. Then, in the early months of the COVID pandemic, I had open-heart-triple-valve-repair surgery. It saved my life. Along with my wife I can rejoice and say, “You, LORD, have delivered me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.”

Response: Father God, I love you LORD, for you heard my voice. Over and over, you have answered my prayers. You have extended my life. You are a very merciful God. Now help to live each day with renewed vigor, thanksgiving, and purpose. Amen.

My regular morning Psalms devotional posts are on a New Year’s Day pause. Instead, here is my personal reflection on the past year.

Here is a brief overview on my year, after all this was 2020—a year to remember. It all began over the 2019 Christmas break with a Holy Spirit nudge to get a heart checkup in the New Year. A series of cardiac tests followed in February and early March. I felt a call to do a 21-day, liquids only fast in February. What a time of drawing close to God that was! For what purpose remained unclear at the time. But God knew what lay ahead, including the great COVID lockdown beginning in mid March..

In May I assumed oversight of Life Bible Institute in Toronto. How this will develop in the months and years to come remains to be seen. I believe the Lord has good plans instore.

As June began and regular hospital routines resumed after the lockdown, I got call after call from the Ottawa Heart Institute. Those tests before the lockdown revealed some major heart issues. On June 30th I was told my heart was enlarged and I needed heart valve repair surgery. This came as quite a shock, since I was feeling great at the time and I was very active. Fourteen days later I suddenly collapsed. A second collapse two days later sent me to hospital by ambulance. On July 24th I had open-heart valve repair surgery. Three valves needed repair. Needless to say, that along with COVID, put a crimp in our summer plans. The remainder of the summer and early fall were all about recovery from major surgery.

So how am I doing? Despite occasional setbacks I’m doing very well, and have resumed almost all my regular activities. I have so much to be thankful for. Karen has been a huge help and comfort to me, during the whole year, and the recovery process. Care from the Heart Institute has been superb. Through it all God has been present and so very faithful.

Despite these difficulties and setbacks, on the writing front, it’s been a very productive year. In late September I completed the translation and celebrated the release of Turkish author Cem Gulbent’s novel, Mind Rooms. Then on December 2nd, volume one of Psalms 365 was released. Volumes two and three will be rolling out over the next six to eight months in 2021. That means all the devotional post that appear daily in this space will be available in book form by mid summer.

Despite heartaches and altered plans, 2020 has been a year to draw close to God and one another. There’s something very beautiful in that.

Karen and I hope you and your family had a splendid Christmas with lots of love and hugs (even if they are virtual.) May God’s peace and blessing rest on you and your household in 2021.

Invincible

Sometimes I feel invincible. In the current Covid pandemic environment, feeling invincible can lead to risky social interactions that endanger our own health and the health of others. Young people in particular are falling ill and becoming vectors of disease because their sense of invincibility leads them to disregard sound advice from health professionals.

An air of youthful invincibility isn’t always a bad thing. The teenaged David had the raw courage to take on Goliath when more mature men–men with common sense–backed away.

But are we invincible? Our physical bodies certainly aren’t invincible. We are all subject to the vagaries of injury, disease and aging. Though I am 68, until recently, I seemed quite immune to these realities. After all I was feeling fine, energetic and physically active, walking on average over 10,000 steps a day.

Imagine my surprise then when my cardiologist informed me that I needed open heart triple valve repair surgery. In that moment my invincibility took a hit. So, I am mortal after all!

Of course, we all know we are going to die. But we like to put off thoughts of that eventuality as long as possible.

Now here I sit writing this, 24 hours away from the surgeon’s blade. How invincible do I feel? Well, in my spirit I still feel invincible, though I know this body will suffer, and at some point die and decay. My confidence does not lie in my flesh, my abilities or the medical professionals. My confidence is in God.

He who raised Christ from the dead will also raise me to a new life.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26, NIV) 

“Do you believe this?” That’s a question we all need to answer. I sincerely hope you can answer, “Yes!”

If through faith you answer in the affirmative, welcome aboard. You too are invincible!
