Reading: Psalm 41
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
(Verses 1-6)
Blessed are those who have regard for the weak;
the LORD delivers them in times of trouble.
The LORD protects and preserves them—
they are counted among the blessed in the land—
he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.
The LORD sustains them on their sickbed
and restores them from their bed of illness.
I said, “Have mercy on me, LORD;
heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
My enemies say of me in malice,
“When will he die and his name perish?”
When one of them comes to see me,
he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander;
then he goes out and spreads it around (NIV).

Reflection
Psalm 41 reminds us that compassion and empathy are at the core of what it means to be a follower of the LORD. David begins this psalm with this declaration, “Blessed are those who have regard for the weak.”

Social justice and care for the poor are not small matters in eyes of LORD. Ancient Israel was destroyed and went into exile because of their disregard for the poor. The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: “It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses. What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?” declares the LORD, the LORD Almighty (Isaiah 3:14-15).

Why is regard for the weak so pivotal in having a right relationship with God? Lack of care or empathy for the needy is based on a kind of self-deception. In arrogance we see ourselves as better than those who are weak or needy. Yet if we examine ourselves, we have all gone through times when we were weak and needy. Sometimes we may need a reminder that our current state of self-sufficiency can come to an end in a moment.

This morning I very nearly hit a pedestrian as she rushed across the street. I sounded my horn thinking she was in error. A quick glance showed she was crossing with the walk light. I was the one in error. I had completely missed a red light. I was the one in need of correction and forgiveness.

Are you doing well now? Praise God. The day will come when you need His help and protection. Do you see someone in need? Help as you are able. The day will come when you will need forgiveness and the help that you have offered others.

Response: LORD God, forgive me when I have looked down on others in need. Open my eyes to someone I may help today. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Reflection

This week’s I Love the Psalms theme is shepherding.

The most endearing thought in all the scriptures may well be the thought of the LORD’s precious care for the sheep of His pasture. The Good Shepherd supplies all our needs. When we are in His care there is no need for worry.

David, the shepherd king, makes this bold declaration:

You, LORD, are my shepherd. I will never be in need (Psalm 23:1, CEV).

Our needs for food, clothing, shelter and loving companionship are constant. They are ever present with us. At some point I’ll be hungry today, and though I will eat well, tomorrow, I’ll be hungry again.

The only thing more constant than our neediness is our Shepherd’s ample provision. What wonderful assurance we can draw from Jesus’ care! He will supply all we need.

Response: LORD God, help me to live in the calm assurance that you are my provider. You have provided abundantly in the past and will continue your care into the future. Thank you. Amen.

Reflection

This week’s I Love the Psalms theme is hunger.

Here’s some breaking news: God doesn’t need you. Yes, you read that correctly. I repeat. God does not need you. He can get along fine without your help. We may desperately need God, but let’s not delude ourselves into thinking that the Maker of the universe needs our help. He is the totally self-sufficient One.

Today’s verse from the Psalms reminds us that God has no needs.

If I were hungry, I wouldn’t tell you, because I own the world and everything in it (Psalm 50:12, CEV).

We experience hunger because we need food. God has no such need. We experience loneliness because we need companionship. God has no so such need. We experience sadness because we need comfort due to loss. God has no such need. But in His great mercy God supplies food for the hungry, love for the lonely and comfort for the downhearted.

In all this we see the grace of God expressed to humanity—to you and me. From His great sufficiency He floods my soul with all I need.

Oh, the wonder of God’s love and grace!

Response: LORD God, you are the God of more than enough. Thank you for the abundance of your grace shown to me through the death and resurrection of your son, Jesus. Amen.

Your Greatest Need

What is your greatest need?

There are many ways to answer that question. For the starving infant it’s food. For the desert wanderer it’s water. For the man who has ruined his lungs by smoking it’s oxygen. For the woman caught in a blizzard it’s warmth and shelter.

But what is your greatest need?

If those life sustaining basics are readily available, what do we need beyond that?  I would say that our greatest need is love. We can have all the basics in abundance, food, shelter, clothing, and good health, but without love we lack meaning and purpose in life.

Paul, the apostle, says it best. If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

If I do not have love, I am nothing.

That statement says it all. Life only has meaning—it takes on meaning—when it is filled with love. Without love your life means zero. Nothing. Zilch. Just a big fat zero.

If I’m not loved and I have no love to give, I may as well end it all. My life has no meaning or purpose. Without love I am nothing.

And let’s not confuse sex with love. One can have sex without having love. In this world it happens all too often. At best sex without love is hollow self-gratification; at worst it’s a form of rape.

Again I say, without love I am nothing. But from a bloody wooden cross Jesus calls to me. He loves me. Pierced bleeding hands whisper, “I love you!”

My life has meaning, will always have meaning, because Jesus loves me. He loves me to death—his death and my death too.

He fills my zero with love—overflowing love.

My greatest need is met. What about yours?

Response: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for loving me when I wasn’t worth loving. Thank you for filling my life with meaning, purpose and love. I can’t thank you enough. Amen.
