It is with a good deal of regret that I feel compelled to write this post. I have steadfastly avoided posting anything political. My posts are about knowing God and His Word. At the same time I have not hidden my nationality. I am Canadian. It’s gratifying to know that people from around the world are reading my thoughts and reflections on the Psalms.
In recent weeks, my country has been threatened daily with annexation by Donald Trump, the president of the United States. This has produce a huge amount of stress among Canadians. To put it bluntly we love our country and have no desire to be forced into a union with any country against our will.
Furthermore, it distresses me to see many American Christians coming under the spell of someone who shows contempt for the weak. Canadians want friendship with our American neighbors, but your president is making that difficult if not impossible.
Here is a brief reflection on two significant events that have happened in our two countries since the new year:
On Friday March 14th, at Rideau Hall in Ottawa in the presence of the Governor General, Mary Simon, Mark Carney stepped forward with his Bible in his hand and took the oath of office pledging his allegiance to King Charles III and his heirs and successors. He thus became the 24th Prime Minister of Canada in a long progression of leaders that extends back to 1867. In the past, Conservative Prime Ministers have done the same. There was nothing particularly unusual or partisan about this ceremony which is rich in tradition and symbolism.
Does the tradition and symbolism matter? Does history and continuity matter? I would argue that it does. It matters more now than at any time in our history since our very existence as a nation is under threat.
There was a striking contrast between how Mark Carney took the oath of office, and how Donald Trump swore to uphold the United States constitution on January 20th, the day of his inauguration. Carney held his Bible in his hand as he took the oath.
In a sharp departure from tradition, Donald Trump did not place his hand on the Bible. His wife Melania extended the Bible toward him, but unlike every American president before him, he did not place his hand on the sacred book. This stands in contrast to the first time he took the oath of office as president in 2016. On that occasion, he placed his hand on the Bible.
Was this a minor oversight? No. Clearly this was a deliberate act—an act of calculated defiance. And what was Donald J. Trump defying? He was defying the supremacy of the law, and by extension the supremacy of God. Though he mouthed the words of the oath of office his actions said he stood apart from the law and above the law.
Every day since his inauguration he has acted in ways that defy the law, the constitution, the judiciary, and the entire legal system. This includes breaking laws and treaties that he enacted and signed in his first term, such as the trade agreement with Mexico and Canada. Should we be surprised? No. Donald Trump signaled he would do this on day one of his presidency by not putting his hand on the Bible.
The Bible that Donald Trump ignored has some choice words to say about such conduct:
My friends, don’t say cruel things about others! If you do, or if you condemn others, you are condemning God’s Law. And if you condemn the Law, you put yourself above the Law and refuse to obey either it or God who gave it (James 4:11-12, CEV).
For people of faith Trump’s conduct should be alarming. But sadly, many have bought into the lies and animosity spouted by this man of lawlessness.
Does tradition and symbolism matter? Because the Word of God is foundational to the legal and national traditions in both United States and Canada it matters immensely. Truth matters.
As for me during this time, these words from our national anthem have deep resonance. “God keep our land glorious and free.”
Well said David. May we judge our leaders wisely by God’s Holy Word, for it is the only true standard that we live by in eternity.
God bless you today brother 🙏
Thanks, Alan. I prefer to stay clear of politics because it’s so divisive, but in this case I feel I must speak because many are being hurt and I believe many have been led astray.
I am ashamed of America because of Trump and the rich CEO in America. Most of us don’t believe what he is doing to our neighbor in Canada and others. Trump will stop at nothing until he destroys all of us here between the cuts he is doing and the cost of everyday we need. America will have more that will hate us because of him. He should of not be allowed to run for president in the first place
I agree with you Eileen. I found it astounding that he was not arrested after the January 6th insurrection. Money is in control in America. Mammon rules, rather than Jesus. It saddens me and ordinary hard-working people are being impoverished. The Canadian government does not need to impose counter tarrifs against United States because most Canadians are simply refusing to buy any American products, and travel to the US has dropped by 70%. Trump is dividing people who were and still would prefer to be friends.
Hi David, Although not a supporter of Mr. Carney or the Liberal party, I appreciate the Biblical wisdom in your post. I actually agree with some of the policies that Mr. Trump has enacted since assuming office – while disagreeing vehemently with others – but I have been troubled from the outset by what I can only call an arrogant attitude. This alone ought to give us cause for concern. Not that political leaders in Canada are immune from pride – but your post correctly highlights the importance of rulers submitting themselves to God. Thank you.
I realize of course that your post was not about Carney. It was about the value of the tradition that – symbolically at least – stresses the PM’s recognition of the authority of God and His word. And I agree. This is of great importance. Thanks again.
I agree that some of Mr. Trumps positions are more in line with Christian teachings on gender and pro-life matters. That’s what has attracted his evangelical base, but I do not believe Mr. Trump is a Christian. He has repented of nothing and by his own words has sought forgiveness for nothing. Repentance and forgiveness are the very foundation of the Christian faith.
Everything Trump is doing is for himself and his rich friends. He is a narcissist and a felon
All political concerns pale in comparison to the spiritual darkness that continues to spread across the world.
I will trust the Lord Jesus with all my personal concerns. And we have many in the US, as well, from many different fronts. A few years down the road and our country may no longer exist. Be that as it may, the Kingdom of God will never fail or falter!
I agree, G.W. But I would add that spiritual darkness spreads through human agency. Are we lifting up Jesus and following his teachings as found on the sermon on the mount? Far too many are falling short, especially in leadership and I include myself and church leadership in general. We need a spirit of repentance to seize us. If there is no repentance United States will tear itself apart, and the dark forces will triumph.
David, many of us in America are deeply distressed and dumbfounded that so many believe in Donald Trump. Please know he doesn’t speak for all of us. I am so conflicted by all of this. You quoted James 4 and for myself, I know God wants me to stay focused on Him. I feel deep pain even as I criticize Trump because I know I’m reflecting his actions and I don’t want to mirror any part of that man. I’ve been trying to pray for him and with each prayer I am helped because I’m turning to God. Thank you for how you worded what was obviously difficult for you to bring up. It’s needed. Blogs or articles that ridicule in anger are no help at all and mirror the ugliness they try to condemn. I didn’t realize Trump didn’t put his hand on the Bible. My husband and I were in a kind of mourning and didn’t watch the inauguration. I think God is showing America what not to trust in, and as it gets worse, which I can’t help but see it doing, His truth will be all the more beautiful and I pray will be the light people cry out for. America has never been perfect. But this…I have no words. Thank you for your heartfelt blog.
Maureen, I know there are many Americans who are aghast by Donald Trump’s agressive stance toward Canada, Greenland and Panama. None of this was part of his election platform. Americans did not vote for this. Canadians want to maintain friendship but it’s difficult when at the highest level we are threatened and disrespected.
Canada has never been perfect either, but we are stronger together when both countries show respect for each other and cooperate in ways that are mutually beneficial. United States is becoming friendless in a hostile world and that does not lead to peace and stability.
Let’s keep praying and may God give us heaven-sent wisdom when we speak or write.
David, I have taken myself out of the political realm because I truly believe we have to depend totally on God to maintain and provide for everything in our daily life. I’ve gotten myself so worked up in the past and it just makes things worse so I have stayed as far away from politics. Division seems to be on a steady road to perdition for several years. We blame it on the government, tradition, sin and even Covid. We have strayed from God’s plan and gone our own way, which is never good. I sympathize with what is going on in our two nations. I don’t agree with a lot that’s going on, but I know I can rely on God’s wisdom knowing he will make good out of it. Now I’m returning to my cone of silence.
Kathy, I get stressed out writing about these things. But remaining silent was also stressing me out. Here in Canada, we are in election mode, so we are living in a very politically charged atmosphere punctuated by eruptions from south of our border.
In all this, Lord Jesus, give me that peace that passes all understanding and let my mind be stayed on you. Amen.
I get it. When these things become personal it gets under our skin. The media has been brutal too and for me personally, I don’t know who to believe anymore. The best answer is to pray, exactly as you have. I’ll pray for God’s direction.
“First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out Because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Thanks for your response. We need to voice our concern about the abuse of power used to shut down opposition. I fear America the free is descending into lawlessness from the top down.
I Think Donald Trump Is on the same level as Adolf Hitler, Jim Jones, Hugo Chavez, Benito Mussolini, Omar al-Bashir, Kim Jong Un, Joseph Stalin, Augusto Pinochet, Fidel Castro, Vladimir Putin, David Koresh, Marshall Applewhite, Charles Manson,
That’s quite a list! Unrestrained power can lead a man down a very destructive path. In his first term, Mr. Trump was restrained by more thoughtful and law-abiding people around him. But now with the full consent of the GOP he has surrounded himself with wingnuts and yes men. Brave souls need to band together, rise up, and oppose him before its too late.
I Think Donald Trump Is a Convicted Rapist
I think he is best described as an apex preditor in his interactions with others.
I Think Melania Trump Is on the same level as Carlton Gebbia, Marina Abramović, Lotta Volkova, Michele Lamy,
I Think Donald Trump Is a Godless Man
Like many politicians he uses religion to garner a following, but there is no depth or repentance to his faith.
I Think Donald Trump Is a snake oil salesman
I Think Donald Trump Is Definitely Not King of United States
Clear, concise, and meaningful. Perfect!
I Think Donald Trump Is “A child of Lilith
I Think Charlie Kirk was on the same level as Anton LaVey, Alexandrian Wicca, Alex Sanders, Baron Samedi, Guede Nibo, Grigori Rasputin,
But violence only worsens the situation. Peace to you and peace to all.
