LORD God,
help me to tend to the garden of my own heart.
When envy raises its head,
help me to decapitate that thought.
I fix my affections on you
and not the things of this world.
Amen.

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy

When they came to the crowd,
a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.
“Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said.
“He has seizures and is suffering greatly.
He often falls into the fire or into the water.
I brought him to your disciples,
but they could not heal him.”

 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,”
Jesus replied,
“how long shall I stay with you?
How long shall I put up with you?
Bring the boy here to me.”

Jesus rebuked the demon,
and it came out of the boy,
and he was healed at that moment.

Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked,
“Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

He replied,
“Because you have so little faith.
Truly I tell you,
if you have faith as small as a mustard seed,
you can say to this mountain,
‘Move from here to there,’
and it will move.
Nothing will be impossible for you.”
(Matthew 17:14-21).

Show me today how I can be a blessing to others.

Lord,
give me a generous spirit like you have.
Amen.

   — — — —

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Predicts His Death

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples
that he must go to Jerusalem
and suffer many things at the hands of the elders,
the chief priests and the teachers of the law,
and that he must be killed
and on the third day be raised to life.

Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
“Never, Lord!” he said.
“This shall never happen to you!”

Jesus turned and said to Peter,
“Get behind me, Satan!
You are a stumbling block to me;
you do not have in mind the concerns of God,
but merely human concerns.”

Then Jesus said to his disciples,
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves
and take up their cross and follow me.
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it,
but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world,
yet forfeit their soul?
Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
For the Son of Man is going to come
in his Father’s glory with his angels,
and then he will reward each person
according to what they have done.

“Truly I tell you,
some who are standing here
will not taste death
before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
(Matthew 16:21-28).

LORD Jesus,

and in me to the end of time.
Amen.

Gospel Reading:
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi,
he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

They replied,
“Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah;
and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But what about you?”
he asked.
“Who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered,
“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied,
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah,
for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,
but by my Father in heaven.

And I tell you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven;
whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven,
and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

Then he ordered his disciples
not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
(Matthew 16:13-20).

LORD God,
thank you for the promise of resurrection.
Thank you for the hope we have in Jesus.

Hallelujah!
Amen.

Gospel Reading:
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees

When they went across the lake,
the disciples forgot to take bread.
“Be careful,” Jesus said to them.
“Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

They discussed this among themselves and said,
“It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”

Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked,
“You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
Do you still not understand?
Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand,
and how many basketfuls you gathered?

Or the seven loaves for the four thousand,
and how many basketfuls you gathered?

How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread?
But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Then they understood

that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread,
but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
(Matthew 16:5-12).

Gospel Reading:
The Demand for a Sign

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him
by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

He replied,
“When evening comes, you say,
‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’

and in the morning,
‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’
You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky,
but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign,
but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”
Jesus then left them and went away.

Amen.

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

When Jesus heard what had happened,
he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.
Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd,
he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said,
“This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late.
Send the crowds away,
so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

Jesus replied,
“They do not need to go away.
You give them something to eat.”

“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,”
they answered.

“Bring them here to me,” he said.
And he directed the people to sit down on the grass.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven,
he gave thanks and broke the loaves.
Then he gave them to the disciples,
and the disciples gave them to the people.
They all ate and were satisfied,
and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls
of broken pieces that were left over.
The number of those who ate was about five thousand men,
besides women and children.
(Matthew 14:13-21).

I don’t want to live the life of the self-satisfied.

I am needy—in constant need of you.

Amen.

   — — — —

Gospel Reading:
John the Baptist Beheaded

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
and he said to his attendants,
“This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead!
That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

Now Herod had arrested John and bound him
and put him in prison because of Herodias,
his brother Philip’s wife,
for John had been saying to him:
“It is not lawful for you to have her.”

Herod wanted to kill John,
but he was afraid of the people,
because they considered John a prophet.

On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias
danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much
that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.

Prompted by her mother, she said,
“Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

The king was distressed,
but because of his oaths and his dinner guests,
he ordered that her request be granted
and had John beheaded in the prison.

His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl,
who carried it to her mother.

John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.

Then they went and told Jesus.
(Matthew 14:1-12).

Gospel Reading:
A Prophet Without Honor

When Jesus had finished these parables,
he moved on from there.
Coming to his hometown,
he began teaching the people in their synagogue,
and they were amazed.
“Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?”
they asked.
 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?
Isn’t his mother’s name Mary,
and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?

Aren’t all his sisters with us?
Where then did this man get all these things?”

And they took offense at him.

But Jesus said to them,
“A prophet is not without honor
except in his own town and in his own home.”

And he did not do many miracles there
because of their lack of faith.
(Matthew 13:53-58).

Jesus and Thomas

A week later his disciples were in the house again,
and Thomas was with them.
Though the doors were locked,
Jesus came and stood among them and said,
“Peace be with you!”

Then he said to Thomas,
“Put your finger here;
see my hands.
Reach out your hand
and put it into my side.
Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas said to him,
“My Lord and my God!”

Then Jesus told him,

blessed are those who have not seen

Look behind the scenes at the political plotting of King Herod, known as the scheming Fox for his ruthless shrewdness.

Get a front-row seat to the confrontation between the Jewish high priest Caiaphas and the Roman governor Pontius Pilate.

Understand as never before the horror of the decision to save a brutal terrorist in order to condemn the peaceful Jew to death.

If you’ve heard the story of Passion Week so often it’s become stale, now is the time to rediscover the terrible events leading from Jesus’s humble ride into the city to his crucifixion. The Soldier Who Killed a King will stun you afresh with how completely Christ’s resurrection changed history, one life at a time.

Today’s Devotion from Psalms 365 by David Kitz

Reading: Psalm 104:27-35
All creatures look to you
to give them their food at the proper time.
When you give it to them, they gather it up;
when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things.
When you hide your face, they are terrified;
when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust.
When you send your Spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground.
May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
may the LORD rejoice in his works—
he who looks at the earth, and it trembles,
who touches the mountains, and they smoke.
I will sing to the LORD all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
May my meditation be pleasing to him,
as I rejoice in the LORD.
But may sinners vanish from the earth
and the wicked be no more.
Praise the LORD, my soul. Praise the LORD (NIV). *

Reflection
Recently, my wife and I attended the funeral of my brother-in-law, Victor. He was a man of deep faith, who was always active in the church. At no point was he ashamed to call himself a follower of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Victor loved his Savior, and I am sure his spirit rejoiced to see Jesus face to face.

There is a line from today’s reading from Psalm 104 which is particularly relevant as we think about life and death: when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground (v. 29b-30).

In context of this psalm, the author was speaking of all creatures, in other words the animal kingdom, but these words apply to all that breathe the breath of life, including humans. For Victor, who struggled for every breath during the last years of his life, the words of this psalm had true meaning. But the second part of this psalm reading is also pertinent in the context of a funeral: When you send your Spirit, they are created.

I believe in the resurrection of the dead. The grave is not the end for those who have placed their faith in Christ. A great re-creation will happen. The grave could not hold Jesus, and a day is coming when it will not hold Victor, or any who have died in the faith. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

Response: Father God, send your reviving Spirit. Renew our faith in your risen Son. Come, Lord Jesus. I long for your return. Amen.

Your Turn: Do you believe in the resurrection of the dead? Who do you long to greet on the other side?
