Gospel Reading:
The Twelve Apostles

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray,
and spent the night praying to God.
When morning came,
he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them,
whom he also designated apostles:
Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew,
James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus,
Simon who was called the Zealot,
Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot,
who became a traitor.
(Luke 6:12-16).

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us:

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields,
and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain,
rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.
Some of the Pharisees asked,
“Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

Jesus answered them,
“Have you never read what David did
when he and his companions were hungry?

He entered the house of God,
and taking the consecrated bread,
he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.
And he also gave some to his companions.”

Then Jesus said to them,
“The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching,
and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled.

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law
were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus,
so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.

But Jesus knew what they were thinking
and said to the man with the shriveled hand,
“Get up and stand in front of everyone.”
So he got up and stood there.

Then Jesus said to them,
“I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath:
to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

He looked around at them all,
and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”
He did so, and his hand was completely restored.

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious
and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
(Luke 6:1-11).

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us:

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Questioned About Fasting

They said to him, “John’s disciples often fast and pray,
and so do the disciples of the Pharisees,
but yours go on eating and drinking.”

Jesus answered,
“Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?
But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;
in those days they will fast.”

He told them this parable:
“No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one.
Otherwise,
they will have torn the new garment,
and the patch from the new will not match the old.
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins;
the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.
And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say,
‘The old is better.’”
(Luke 5:33-39).

LORD God,

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners

After this, Jesus went out
and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth.
“Follow me,” Jesus said to him,
and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.

Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house,
and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law
who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples,
“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
I have not come to call the righteous,
but sinners to repentance.”
(Luke 5:27-32).

LORD God,
I want your holiness to adorn my house and my heart.
Help me to conform to your will and your ways,
rather than the other way around.
You are my Lord.
Reign on sovereign LORD.
Reign in glorious majesty.
Amen.

   — — — —

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man

One day Jesus was teaching,
and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there.
They had come from every village of Galilee
and from Judea and Jerusalem.
And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.

Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat
and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.

When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd,
they went up on the roof
and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd,
right in front of Jesus.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said,
“Friend, your sins are forgiven.”

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves,
“Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy?
Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked,
“Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?
 Which is easier: to say,
‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say,
‘Get up and walk’?
But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”
So he said to the paralyzed man,
“I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”
Immediately he stood up in front of them,
took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.

Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.
They were filled with awe and said,
“We have seen remarkable things today.”
(Luke 5:17-26).

LORD God,

I want my life to bear fruit that will bring honor to you.
Help me to radiate your goodness and beauty.
Amen.

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy

While Jesus was in one of the towns,
a man came along who was covered with leprosy.
When he saw Jesus,
he fell with his face to the ground and begged him,
“Lord, if you are willing,
you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.
“I am willing,” he said.
 “Be clean!”
And immediately the leprosy left him.

Then Jesus ordered him,
“Don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest
and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing,
as a testimony to them.”

Yet the news about him spread all the more,
so that crowds of people came to hear him
and to be healed of their sicknesses.
But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Calls His First Disciples

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,
the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.

He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen,
who were washing their nets.

He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon,
and asked him to put out a little from shore.
Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon,
“Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.
But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

When they had done so,
they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them,
and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this,
he fell at Jesus’ knees and said,
“Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”

For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,

and so were James and John,
the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon,
“Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”

So they pulled their boats up on shore,
left everything and followed him.
(Luke 5:1-11).

LORD,
you are such a good God.

and yet you continually pour out your blessings.
I love you, LORD.
I want to dwell in you now and always.
Amen.

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Heals Many

Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon.
Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever,
and they asked Jesus to help her.

So he bent over her and rebuked the fever,
and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness,
and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.

Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting,
“You are the Son of God!”
But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak,
because they knew he was the Messiah.

At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place.
The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was,
they tried to keep him from leaving them.
But he said,
“I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also,
because that is why I was sent.”

And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
(Luke 4:38-44).

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee,
and on the Sabbath he taught the people.
They were amazed at his teaching,
because his words had authority.

In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon,
an impure spirit.
He cried out at the top of his voice,
“Go away! What do you want with us,
Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

“Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down before them all
and came out without injuring him.

All the people were amazed and said to each other,
“What words these are!
With authority and power
he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”
And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
(Luke 4:31-37).

LORD,
I often become impatient or frustrated with my work.

and through me as I go about my daily tasks.
Help me to have an eternal perspective.
Lord, establish the work of my hands.
Amen.

Gospel Reading:
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,
left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.
He ate nothing during those days,
and at the end of them he was hungry

The devil said to him,
“If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus answered,
“It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’

The devil led him up to a high place
and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.
And he said to him,
“I will give you all their authority and splendor;
it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to
If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written:
‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’
”

The devil led him to Jerusalem
and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
“If you are the Son of God,” he said,
“throw yourself down from here.

For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ ”

Jesus answered, “It is said:
‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”

When the devil had finished all this tempting,
he left him until an opportune time.
(Luke 4:1-13).
