I will praise the LORD!

Psalm 16

Listen to today’s reading by Jonathan Dent:

https://davidkitz.blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/psalm-16-final-mix.mp3

A miktam of David.

Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing.”
I say of the holy people who are in the land,
“They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
Those who run after other gods will suffer
more and more.
I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
or take up their names on my lips.
LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup;
you make my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I keep my eyes always on the LORD.
With him at my right hand,
I will not be shaken (NIV). *

James—the brother of Jesus—who was this man? What evidence do we have that this “brother of our Lord” even existed?

David Kitz digs deep into archeology, family dynamics, church history, and the biblical texts. What emerges from his research is a portrait of a decisive, pivotal leader who embodied the will and character of Jesus Christ.

But how did James—James the unbeliever—transform to become a leader who changed the course of world history? In these pages you will uncover the answer and rediscover for yourself the life-changing power of the gospel.

You provide a broad path for my feet — photo by David Kitz

Reading: Psalm 18:30-36

As for God, his way is perfect:
    The LORD’s word is flawless;
    he shields all who take refuge in him.
For who is God besides the LORD?
    And who is the Rock except our God?
It is God who arms me with strength
    and keeps my way secure.
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
    he causes me to stand on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle;
    my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You make your saving help my shield,
    and your right hand sustains me;
    your help has made me great.
You provide a broad path for my feet,
    so that my ankles do not give way.

Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
    they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
    their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
    their righteousness endures forever;
    their horn will be lifted high in honor.

It is you who watch over my way — photo by David Kitz

As we have heard,
    so we have seen
in the city of the LORD Almighty,
    in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
    forever.

Within your temple, O God,
    we meditate on your unfailing love.
Like your name, O God,
    your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;
    your right hand is filled with righteousness.
Mount Zion rejoices,
    the villages of Judah are glad
    because of your judgments.

The Lord will keep you safe
from secret traps
    and deadly diseases.
He will spread his wings
over you
    and keep you secure.
    His faithfulness is like
    a shield or a city wall.

You, LORD, never fail to have pity on me; your love and faithfulness always keep me secure (Psalm 40:11 CEV).

Reflection

In keeping with the Advent season, this week’s I Love the Psalms theme is faithfulness.

There are many things in life that fail. We have failing grades, failed businesses and careers, failed products and failed marriages. But through it, all the scriptures assure us there is One who is faithful. The LORD has pity on us. His love and faithfulness stand secure.

Response: LORD God, I am thankful that you have mercy on me when I fail. Your love and faithfulness holds me secure even now. Amen.

Your Turn: Has the Lord helped you through times of failure?
