Reading: Psalm 22:16-21

Lord Jesus,
my thanks flows to you.
You were forsaken
so I might have eternal life.
Thank you for thinking of me
and others,
rather than of yourself.
You deserve all praise,
now and forever.
Amen.

The Birth of the Messiah

But when the set time had fully come,
God sent his Son,
born of a woman,
born under the law,

to redeem those under the law,
that we might receive adoption to sonship.
Because you are his sons,
God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts,
the Spirit who calls out,
“Abba, Father.”

So you are no longer a slave,
but God’s child;
and since you are his child,
God has made you also an heir.

New from David Kitz

James—the brother of Jesus—who was this man? What evidence do we have that this “brother of our Lord” even existed?

David Kitz digs deep into archeology, family dynamics, church history, and the biblical texts. What emerges from his research is a portrait of a decisive, pivotal leader who embodied the will and character of Jesus Christ.

But how did James—James the unbeliever—transform to become a leader who changed the course of world history? In these pages you will uncover the answer and rediscover for yourself the life-changing power of the gospel.

Today’s Reading: Psalm 137:7-9

Father God,
at times I have been guilty of schadenfreude.
Help me to show compassion
rather than smug indifference
when I see others experience loss.
Thank you for your ongoing mercy.
Amen.

— — — —

Bless those who persecute you;
bless and do not curse.

Rejoice with those who rejoice;
mourn with those who mourn.

Live in harmony with one another.
Do not be proud,
but be willing to associate
with people of low position.
Do not be conceited.

Silver and gold — photo courtesy of Liz Kranz

Reading: Psalm 135:15-21

Father God,
I need the right perspective
on wealth and finances.
Lord Jesus,
your precious blood is worth more
than all the silver and gold
this world has to offer.
I bow before you
as my Almighty Savior.
Amen.

— — — —

Since you call on a Father
who judges each person’s work impartially,
live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.

For you know that it was not with perishable things
such as silver or gold
that you were redeemed
from the empty way of life
handed down to you from your ancestors,

but with the precious blood of Christ,
a lamb without blemish or defect.

He was chosen before the creation of the world,
but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

Through him you believe in God,
who raised him from the dead
and glorified him,
and so your faith and hope are in God.

Praise the LORD.
Praise God in his sanctuary;

Praise him for his acts of power;

Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,

Today’s quote and prayer from

Reading: Psalm 134

Father God,
I thank you for loving me
and inviting me into your family.
Lord Jesus,
thank you for purchasing my redemption.
Holy Spirit,
I thank you for the confirmation
that I am your child.
Amen.

The true light that gives light
to everyone was coming into the world.

He was in the world,
and though the world was made through him,
the world did not recognize him.
He came to that which was his own,
but his own did not receive him.

Yet to all who did receive him,
to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God—

children born not of natural descent,
nor of human decision
or a husband’s will,
but born of God.

Today’s quote and prayer from
“Psalms 365: Develop a Life of Worship and Prayer”
by David Kitz

Reading: Psalm 131

Father God,
help me to change.
I want to become more like Jesus.
He was the servant of all.
Help me to avoid the pitfall of pride.
Teach me how to quiet my soul
and be content in you.

Amen.

— — — —

Now about your love for one another
we do not need to write to you,
for you yourselves have been taught
by God to love each other.

And in fact,
you do love all of God’s family
throughout Macedonia.
Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters,
to do so more and more,

and to make it your ambition
to lead a quiet life:
You should mind your own business
and work with your hands,
just as we told you,

so that your daily life
may win the respect of outsiders
and so that you will not be dependent
on anybody.

NIV)*

Today’s quote and prayer from
“Psalms 365: Develop a Life of Worship and Prayer”
by David Kitz.

Reading: Psalm 130:1-4

Father God,
I thank you for forgiveness.
I have failed you many times,
but you are rich in mercy.
You are a patient God.
Thank you for destroying the record of my sins.
Thank you for the blood Jesus shed
so I could be washed clean.
Amen.

— — — —

So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off,
his father saw him
and was filled with compassion for him;
he ran to his son,
threw his arms around him and kissed him.

“The son said to him,
‘Father,
I have sinned against heaven
and against you.
I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants,
‘Quick! Bring the best robe
and put it on him.
Put a ring on his finger
and sandals on his feet.

Bring the fattened calf and kill it.
Let’s have a feast and celebrate.

For this son of mine was dead
and is alive again;
he was lost and is found.’
So they began to celebrate.

Reading: Psalm 123

Father God,
I come before you now.
I lift up my eyes to you,

Be merciful to me.
Speak to me.
Correct me if I need correction.
Give me direction.
I am ready to receive instruction from you.
I am your servant.
Amen.

We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians,

We are not withholding our affection from you,
but you are withholding yours from us.

As a fair exchange—
I speak as to my children—
open wide your hearts also.

The path ahead — photo by David Kitz

Reading: Psalm 119:105-112

Father God,
shine the light of your Word
on the path of life
you have ordained for me to walk.
I am not on this path by accident,
but through your will and purpose.
Spirit of God,
guide me home.

Amen.

— — — —

Therefore,
strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.

“Make level paths for your feet,”
so that the lame may not be disabled,
but rather healed.

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone
and to be holy;
without holiness no one will see the Lord.

See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God
and that no bitter root grows up
to cause trouble and defile many.

Reading: Psalm 119:57-64

Father God,
