Bent on Rebellion

Reading: Psalm 106:40-48
Therefore the LORD was angry with his people
and abhorred his inheritance.
He gave them into the hands of the nations,
and their foes ruled over them.
Their enemies oppressed them
and subjected them to their power.
Many times he delivered them,
but they were bent on rebellion
and they wasted away in their sin.
Yet he took note of their distress when he heard their cry;
for their sake he remembered his covenant
and out of his great love he relented.
He caused all who held them captive to show them mercy.
Save us, LORD our God, and gather us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.
Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Let all the people say, “Amen!”
Praise the LORD (NIV).*

Reflection
Have you ever tried to drive in a crooked nail? You are asking for trouble if you make the attempt. If the nail has even a slight bend in it, it will either buckle or be misdirected as it enters the wood. Over the years I have hammered home a lot of nails. And only straight nails stay true.

Today’s final reading from Psalm 106 reminds me of bent nails. The psalmist laments the corrupt ways of the nation of Israel despite the LORD’s mercy and patience. Many times he delivered them, but they were bent on rebellion and they wasted away in their sin.

Many people are like bent nails. Despite many blows—many hard knocks—they refuse to run true. They are bent on rebellion and they waste away in their sin. Their troubles are self-inflicted, but rather than acknowledge their errors, they blame God or others for their circumstances. Repentance or self-correction never enters their mind.

But… But God remains merciful. Yet he took note of their distress when he heard their cry; for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented.

Why would God have mercy on bent nails? Maybe it has something to do with the bent nails that held Jesus, His son, in place on a wooden cross. That’s where mercy flowed down over this bent nail—this flawed human. Oh, what love He showed!

Response: Father God, I give up on understanding your mercy and grace. It’s beyond comprehension. Thank you for loving me despite my sinful bent. Your love is amazing. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.

Your Turn: Is rebellion part of your nature? How can we self-correct? Reflect on times when you called on God’s help to correct an attitude or behavior.

God's favor, God's grace, His blessing, mercy

Reading: Psalm 85:8-13
I will listen to what God the LORD says;
he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—
but let them not turn to folly.
Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land.
Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
and righteousness looks down from heaven.
 The L
ORD will indeed give what is good,
and our land will yield its harvest.
Righteousness goes before him
and prepares the way for his steps
(NIV).*

Reflection
Psalm 85 began with the psalmist reflecting on a wonderful time of God’s favor and forgiveness. God’s grace had been abundant and a source of great joy. But that is not the present reality. It would seem for some reason God’s hand of blessing has been lifted and the psalmist finds himself crying out for mercy and revival. “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your unfailing love, LORD, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85:6-7).

Times of hardship and personal setbacks can leave us wondering if God has abandoned us. Have we sinned? Has God withdrawn His blessing from our lives? Will He show us His kindness once again? In difficult times these questions often flood our minds.

After pleading for restoration and pouring out his troubles before God the psalmist makes this statement, “I will listen to what God the LORD says.”

Now that’s sound advice. Listening to what God says is always a good idea. It resolves inner conflict and brings peace of mind. And what does God the LORD say? “He promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—but let them not turn to folly.”

Often, we feel that when things aren’t going right in our lives, we must be at fault. Perhaps we are and we should repent. But there are other times when the hardships we face are not due to sin or error on our part. Troubles and difficulties come to all of us. On such occasions the LORD promises us peace. He assures us that we are walking in His will, and He is right there with us in the midst of life’s storms. Here is His promise for you: The LORD will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest. Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.

Hang onto the righteousness of God. He is about to step into your life in a beautiful way.

Response: LORD God, I turn to you in the middle of my difficulties. Open my ears to hear your voice speaking to me. I trust you to lead me. Come and step into my life. Amen.

Your Turn: Can you recall occasions when God has stepped into your life? What did that look like?

The Card that Broke Me

grace, heart transformation, kindness, love, mercy

This guest post by Brandon Andress highlights a life-changing truth.

When kindness confronts us through undeserved mercy, undeserved grace, or undeserved love, it can be transformative.        — By Brandon Andress

When I was in college and dating Jenny (who is now my wife), there was a Friday night in which we were planning to hang out. As the minutes and then the hours began to pass, I became increasingly impatient, frustrated, and angry that she was taking so long, not answering my phone calls, and ruining our Friday.

After several hours of waiting in my room with no response, there was finally a knock at my door. And as Jenny walked in, my anger was immediately evident. I was fuming mad and peppering her with a litany of questions.

Where have you been?

What have you been doing?

Why are you so late?

Why didn’t you answer my calls?

I wasn’t listening to anything she said. There wasn’t a response that would have satisfied my anger.

But then, instead of trying to answer my questions, she just handed me a card.

And it wasn’t just any card.

It was a card that she had meticulously and patiently and lovingly crafted for me over the three previous hours. It detailed, in overwhelming specificity, all the memorable moments we had shared as a couple and how much she loved me.

I got very silent.

Stick-my-foot-in-my-mouth silent.

img_20220217_1944436

A greeting card (not the original).

Let’s be honest. It would have been easier to withhold the card and break up with me right there on the spot. I did not come close to deserving the card. But Jenny gave it to me anyway, despite my anger and bewilderment, as an act of profound kindness and love.

My anger turned to regret.

It was her kindness, not her justified retaliation, that made me want to change—to be more patient, more kind, and more loving myself. It was her kindness, despite how I violated our relationship, that changed my heart.

When kindness confronts us through undeserved mercy, undeserved grace, or undeserved love, it can be transformative.

There is wisdom that states that the kindness of God transforms the heart. Not the guilt of God. Not the shame of God. Not the threats of God. It is the kindness of God that changes a person from the inside, creating vibrancy and life.

Question

  1. With so much of life feeling like anger, hatred, and division, how might a person begin to experience the kindness of God?

Peace,

Brandon Andress
