Update: A New Title

I was assured this week by Deb Haggerty of Elk Lake Publishing that myElk Lake Logo devotional book on the Psalms would be published by the end of November.

I was also informed that the title for my book has been changed to Psalms 365: Develop a Life of Worship and Prayer. The working title had been 365 Days through the Psalms with the subtitle Developing a Life of Worship and Prayer.

I like the new title because it combines the original title with the subtitle in an effective way. 

This will be a three volume set with the first volume available for Christmas giving. For readers, it will be a great way to start the New Year with a daily devotion drawn from the Psalms.

I wish I could include a cover photo with this post, but I’m sure that will be arrive in the coming days.

One Book Becomes Three Books

In a recent discussion with the head of Elk Lake Publishing, we reached a decision to publish 385 Days through the Psalms as a three volume set. We are still on track to have the first book released this summer, with the second book coming in the fall, and the third volume in early 2021.

At the end of the editing process the manuscript totaled 735 pages. That makes for quite a hefty book. Moving to three volumes will result in books of a more manageable size. It also allows for multiple release dates and hopefully a growing readership with the release of each new book.

Sample CoverThe first volume will cover January through April, the second volume May through August, and the third volume September through December.   

Yes, the devotions in these books will be largely identical to my daily online posts. But let’s face it. Some people just like the look and feel of a book. In addition, you can’t underline or mark up an online post, but you are free to do just that with a book.

More information on 385 Days through the Psalms will be coming as the release approaches.

In the meantime, Psalms Alive! Connecting Heaven and Earth is still available on my website, and through other sources such as Amazon and Christianbook.com.

 

Craft, Cost & Call: How to Build a Life as a Christian Writer

For anyone who is serious about developing a career as a Christian writer, this book is a48117319 (2) true gem. From start to finish, authors Patricia Paddey and Karen Stiller provide a host of tips, and sound advice that can benefit any writer. This holds true for the novice writer as well as the grizzled veteran.

The book is broadly divided into three sections: craft, cost and call, that match the title. The authors don’t hold back in exposing both their successes and failures as writers. It’s great to see your own struggles mirrored by these two professionals. There is an integrity and a candor to their writing that I truly admire.

I was left wanting more from these two authors, especially in section on our God-given call to write. But I see wanting more as a good thing.

For anyone on the writing journey I highly recommend this book. I was introduced to this book through the Ottawa Christian Writers’ Fellowship, which is a local chapter of The Word Guild.

A Book Review

Some books pass through your mind without provoking much thought, or reflection. 51z4lcpbjul._sx331_bo1,204,203,200_Others do just the opposite. They are meant to be savored. I place Lament for Spilt Porter in this latter category.

At its heart this is a book about nostalgia. The subtitle is Longing for Family and Home. Larry J. McCloskey explores that longing by reflecting on his own family growing up in the 1950s and 60s in Ottawa, Canada’s capital.

Maybe the book appealed to me because I grew up during the same timeframe. Maybe it appealed to me because for the last 30 years Ottawa has been my home. But I suspect that this book has a more universal appeal, because it addresses the deep longing for home that is in all our hearts, regardless of age or geography.

A Meaningful Read

McCloskey not only laments the loss of his parents, he also laments the loss of their values—values that are rooted in family, church and an unflinching faith in God. Above all else, McCloskey wrestles with the very idea of God—the God that modern society has turned its back on. His is a restless faith, racked with doubt, but seeking God nonetheless. That pursuit is an underlying theme throughout.

If all this seems rather heavy and dour, breathe easy. There’s plenty of humor in these pages, and some unforgettable characters too. But be forewarned: McCloskey packs more meaning into a single sentence than many authors capture in an entire chapter. There’s very little fluff, and plenty of mental nutrition that a reader can draw from every chapter.

If you are still longing for home, this is a most meaningful read.

Psalms Alive! can be best described as a 237-page devotional study of thirteen selected psalms spanning a total of twenty-six chapters.


In typical devotional style each chapter begins with a psalm or psalm portion. Then for five or six pages the author discusses this portion by bringing other scripture to bear, drawing from his personal life experience or relating powerful stories that illustrate the key thoughts highlighted in this psalm. Each chapter then ends with a number of questions or action prompts that are aimed at bringing the psalm to life for the reader. By including these questions, the book lends itself easily to group study and discussion.

The twenty-six chapter format provides a half year of curriculum material for churches or study groups that wish to grow their love for God through engaging with the Psalms.  Of course Psalms Alive! works equally well as a personal study anchored in the unchanging truths of God’s word.

Coloring Outside the Lines

This book review of The Soldier Who Killed a King caught my eye for a number of reasons. Sabrina Wade captured the spirit and the essence of this book. Here is her five star review:

At first, the beginning of this novel took my mind back to the movie Risen. As I kept reading, the novel blossomed into so much more.

Kitz, did an excellent job staying super close to the biblical accounts4485 SHARABLE-1 surrounding the death, burial, and resurrection of my Lord Jesus Christ. The fictional details of the ”what ifs” concerning not only the centurion, but also the many bystanders held me captivated. Those scenes were like coloring outside the lines. They gave the reader an additional piece of art without tampering with the original.

If hearing the truth about Jesus Christ through Bible study, around Easter, or from a neighbor isn’t appealing or worth believing PICK UP A COPY. Kitz will have your heart in his hand from the beginning until the end. He will make you question why you are still in denial. And for others he will lovingly remind you why Grace is sooooooooooo AmAzINg!

Psalms Alive! Connecting Heaven and Earth

Psalms Alive! Connecting Heaven and Earth can be best described as a devotional study of thirteen selected psalms. The writing is devotional in that its goal is to have the reader reflect, ponder and apply the truths of the psalms, but unlike a typical devotional these readings do not end after a page. Each chapter or reading is about 5-6 pages in length and it ends with a number of questions or suggested activities to make that psalm come alive for the reader. In this way the author examines thirteen psalms in the space of twenty-six chapters—237 pages. The questions or application portion of each chapter make this book ideal for small group discussion. The goal throughout, as the subtitle suggests, is for the reader to connect to connect with God—to connect heaven and earth by means of the psalms.

How can words written so long ago be relevant today? In Psalms Alive! author David Kitz reveals how the Lord has spoken to him through the Psalms. Kitz draws on his experiences as a pastor, teacher, writer, father and dramatist to bring these words alive. His personal accounts of the scripture and how they relate to his life provide connections for the reader to make in their own life. He adds historical background information to the Psalms and this enhances the reader’s experience. Reading “Psalms Alive!” will certainly make the Psalms come alive!

When it comes to fiction books that are centered around Biblical times, it takes a really good author to hook me into the story line. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading my Bible, however, not every author can create a story that brings the Biblical portion off the book pages and to the reader like a movie screen. David Kitz, however, truly hooked me with this book, and took me on a first-class whirlwind ride through history.

I absolutely felt every emotion of this book, watching, most often on the edge of my seat, Soldier bookas Christ was crucified. This book really brings to life the Biblical and the historical detail. As I watched the Roman centurion who was tasked with awful task, I found myself with tears in my eyes, both for him, and for Christ. It was a heart-wrenching, gut twisting, thought provoking story of sacrifice and pain.

This book……anything less than a 5 star review would be a disgrace. The style of which David Kitz wrote this novel is stunning and captivating.

This book is definitely not for everyone though. If you are a reader of Biblical fiction, if you want to see what happened during that eventful week in time, then this book is for you. You will not be disappointed and you will want more! I know I am already ready for another beautifully written novel of Biblical times by this superbly talented author! Grab The Soldier Who Killed a King and be prepared for a jaw dropping experience of watching the crucifixion come into play.
